For the next few weeks, Charleston’s gardens will be coming into their own; quickening, budding, and blossoming and offering up their spectacular beauty for us all. Folks have been pruning, raking and tweaking for weeks, and now the finishing touches are being made with a good eye and loving hands. Some folks employ gardeners but many get their hands dirty. I’ve watched some of these gardens unfold and open up peering through fences and over walls, and next week they will spread their gates wide and welcome all of Charleston to visit.
It’s difficult to choose which ones to tour, which ones will speak to me? I surely cannot see all of them…not enough time, not enough money (it’s $45 dollar a go). Will I take in Church Street and the oh-so-famous Mrs. Whaley’s garden, or lesser known Anson Street? Just yesterday I discovered Legare Street and proclaimed it to be my new favorite street. Now I see it is listed as a choice. Oh….what a quandary. There are 13 different neighborhoods to choose from. Tickets are going fast….I’ll have to decide soon. So many gardens…..so little time. Shoot, I didn't even know I liked gardens (other people's that is) but that's what retirement does for you. New and fresh ideas just pop into your head. Go figure?
